Uranus - First planet discovered by telescope - identified by William   Herschel. Spins on its side, nearly in plane of Solar System. No solid surface Faint rings (within Roche distance) 21 moons - all but 5 discovered by space probes strong magnetic field - similar to that of Earth Vital Statistics Radius  - 25,559 km  -  4.0 times the Earth  Mass     - 8.68 x 10 25  kg  -  14.5 times the Earth Mean density  - 1.33 g/cm - 25% that of the Earth Atmosphere: almost entirely Hydrogen and Helium Distance from Sun: 19.2 AU Surface Temp   - 58 K Neptune Smallest and most distant of Jovian planets Discovered because of its effect on the orbit of Uranus by Adams and Leverrier (seen by Galileo, however) Faint rings Internal heat source 11 moons  - 2 known from ground based observations Vital Statistics Radius  24,764 km   3.9 times the Earth   Mass     2.33 x 10 25  kg   17 times the Earth Mean density  -  1.33 g/cm 3   34% that of the Earth Atmosphere: mostly Hydrogen and Helium Distance from Sun:  30.1 AU

Moons: Triton  orbits  in retrograde direction, only reasonably large object in solar system  to do so. Rings show uneven brightness around the circumference Overview of the Jovian Planets 1)  All are much larger than the Earth.  They have a large variation in size from 4  - 11 times the radius of the       Earth. 2) They are giant gaseous planets with no crustal surface. 3) Composition very different from terrestrial planets:      mostly hydrogen and helium. 4) All have multiple moons.  Largest moons larger than Earth’s moon.
