RELI 2080- Lecture 1 - Muhammad born in 570 in Makkah. (Year of the Elephant). - In his early days, Muhammad was very spiritual. The early encounter with Gabriel was of great burden to him due to the seriousness of the revelation and responsibility. - Muhammad’s mission- Da’wa- to summon and spread the message of Tawhid in times of Jahiliyya (age of ignorance/pre- islamic period)- paganism (acknowledges many Gods rather than one; shirk). - Muhammad soon embarks on a migration to Madina (Yathrib) in 622. (Islamic calendar begins). Muhammad goes from a religious scholar to a political statesman with the mission of reconquering Makkah. (politics and religion are fused together). He drafts a constitution in Medinah to provide rights to muslims and non-muslims with the central recurring term being ummah (early groups contained Jews who had to pay poll tax) - Hijra becomes a central theme in modern Islamic thought i.e. travelling from country due to religious constraints e.g. Egypt.
