Wahabi movement in Saudi Arabia- Ali- led based in Kufa, Iraq rather than Medinah in order to maintain control of Arabia. Egypt, Iraq, and Syria are the main areas of the Muslim empire except for the pilgrimage. In the 18 th century, there is a revival in Islamic learning in terms of Hadith and Quran (Basic text Muwwatta- [Malik] in order to undercut history back to the early days of salaf [time of Prophet]). There was a rejection of Ijtihad (independent reasoning) and a push for taqlid (following of tradition) Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahab- Identified wahabis against the others. (although they don’t refer to themselves as wahabis rather muwahidud (those who declare God’s unity). Muhammad in Al Wahab saw the rise in belief of powers of Jinn as a discreditor to Tawhid. Between 1744-1818, the first Saudi state lasted. Wahab is expelled by the inhabitants after offending the polytheists. (takfir; declaring a Muslim to be a kafir) Ibn Saud sees this a religiopolitical basis for his clan to exert their authority
