Populism- formal historical movement that resisted changes made in American politics due to industrialization b. populism- want democracy that is representative- they send people to Washington to do what they want them to do i. Attack elite power ii. Elites- can manipulate public opinion and get what they want out of government 1. control the media and they are the media a. Hollywood: movies 2. Dominate schools II. Left wing populism a. Elites- Big corporations that dominate politics and economy b. Solution to elite role- need to be controlled by government- regulation, government should oversee the economy c. Mass americans d. Progressive is another movement of reform i. More educated III. Right wing populism a. New Class Theory- inteligencia- “symbol analyst” b. Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reily c. Tea Party i. Solution to elite rule- throw off domination of “new class” which has govt getting larger and larger- wants to cut govt back
