University of Manitoba Department of Chemistry CHEM 2220 Introductory Organic Chemistry II: Reactivity and Synthesis Course Outline 2009R Session (Winter 2009) Dr. Philip G. Hultin 554 Parker [email protected] 474-9814 Dr. Torsten Hegmann 570 Parker [email protected] 474-7535 The CHEM 2220 Website provides complete course content, policy and expectations: umanitoba.ca/chemistry/courses/chem222/ You will find much useful material on the course website – USE IT! Required Materials: Fox and Whitesell, Organic Chemistry 3rd Edition (same book as for CHEM 2210) CHEM 2220 Laboratory Manual Suggested Supplements: Fox and Whitesell Study Guide and Solutions Manual. William C. Groutas Organic Reaction Mechanisms: Selected Problems and Solutions . David R. Klein Organic Chemistry II as a second language . Course Philosophy In CHEM 2220 we will emphasize the underlying principles of organic reactivity. Examples are given to illustrate these principles, not necessarily because the example itself is intrinsically important. Successful studying will combine learning the principles with practice applying them to solve problems. Our goal is twofold: First, to provide a sound basis of both fact and principle in organic chemistry, and Second, to teach logical analysis and problem solving. For most of you, the second goal may be most important. All career paths require logical thinking, and you can learn it in any subject if you approach the subject rigorously. This alone is worth the effort that we demand of students, and you will be repaid handsomely for your efforts in years to come. Preparation for lectures: All students are assumed to be conversant with material and concepts from CHEM 1300, CHEM 1310 and CHEM 2210 upon entry into CHEM 2220. A list of topics from previous courses that we have found to be especially important has been posted on the course website. Students are expected to have read the appropriate sections of the textbook prior to each lecture. Lectures will not cover everything in the course curriculum, but will focus on the central ideas of each assigned topic. Students will be expected to answer questions on anything in the assigned textbook readings in tests and exams. Getting Help We expect a lot from students in CHEM 2220, but we will also provide a lot of help. It is up to you to ask for assistance however. The course has a
