If you observe, are verbally informed, or have
knowledge that leads you to reasonably suspect
an elder or dependent adult is being abused or
neglected, you must call.
PHYSICAL ABUSE: Infliction of physical pain or
great bodily injury.
SEXUAL ABUSE: Sexual contact that results
from threats, force or the inability of the person
to give consent.
NEGLECT (BY OTHERS): Refusal or failure to
fulfill care taking obligations such as abandon-
ment or isolation, denial of food, medical assis-
tance or personal needs.
Neglect can be inten-
tional or unintentional.
PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE/EMOTIONAL ABUSE:
The infliction of mental anguish (threatening,
humiliating, intimidating, and isolating behav-
iors or statements).
FINANCIAL ABUSE: The illegal or improper ex-
ploitation of funds or other resources (stealing or
misusing possessions, property, or money).
RED FLAG INDICATORS
Indicators often seen by service and medical
professionals:
Bruises, welts, lacerations, broken bones,
and burns.
