Sarah Penny 7 th period, Wood August 26, 2010 1. The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane. 2. The novel was first published in 1895. 3. The Red Badge of Courage was set during the U.S. Civil War during the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia, over four days in May of 1863. 4. The Red Badge of Courage is about young soldier named Henry Fleming who starts off as a naïve child but soon faces the truth about war and is able to find his identity on the battlefield. Henry yearns to experience the glory of war but comes to contradict himself and wonders if he has the courage when the first battle approaches. Henry ends up fleeing but while wandering he is able to re-examine himself and discover what is really important in life. Henry later reunites with his companions and becomes the hero he had wanted all along. 5. Henry Fleming Henry is the novel’s protagonist. He is referred to as “the young soldier” and “the youth” throughout the novel. Above all else Henry desires a reputation. He hopes that his action on the battlefield will give him the title as a hero among men.
