EFFECTS OF RELIGION 2 Effects of Religion Post a response to this prompt: Religion can affect people in many different ways. List at least two effects that organized religion has had on society and give examples from past and/or present world events that illustrate your examples. Such things as war and various types of hate crimes have a negative effect on organized religion in today’s society. One example would be the Catholic Protestant war in Ireland another example would be the crusades that created havoc. (Ganly, 2007) The World Trade Center attack and the Iraq war go hand in hand with each other and are a perfect example of how hate crimes can cause war. When the World Trade Center was attacked many hate crimes were made towards Muslims and Arabs. People began to fear Muslims and Arabs thinking that they were terrorists. Organized religion can promote ignorance which can be a cause for discrimination and a cause of hate crimes. (Ganly, 2007) A positive effect that organized religion can have is the unity it can bring between people. People in many religions will go out of their way to help others who need help. An example would be the Baptist Churchs at Christmas time adopts the children who have a parent in prison or jail so that the children receive a gift from the parent that is in prison the church also helps pay to send the kids to summer camp and back to school backpacks and school supplies. Another example would be when hurrican Katrina happen many voulenteers from differanrt churchs and organizations helped these familys out with food, shelter, even rebuilding homes.
