Unformatted text preview: Technical Roles in NPD with a Focus on R&D FOS 4435/5437 Spring 2011 24 January 2011 Technology VP Technology R&D Technical support Quality control Engineering Technology R&D Often comprised of product, process and package development (NPD functions) As well as basic science (or some research) Functional disciplines such as analytical chemistry, microbiology, horticultural science, nutritional science Technology - Technical Support May be day-to-day support functions such as QC analysis (GC-MS work for flavors, for example) or micro on daily production Many companies contract out some of their technical support to outside labs; technical support manages the flow of this information Technology QC/QA Often the technical resource at the production level Also, generally the supervisor of food safety issues and programs (HACCP) Must be involved early on in NPD for this reason Technology - Engineering Interfaces with process development and production in the NPD process Also responsible for environmental, equipment, plant design and strategic capital improvements Big projects are often contracted out to a Design & Construction firm FPD Engineering Engineering is the discipline of putting scientific knowledge to practical uses, i.e. food science transformed to commercially viable food products For a new food product to be successful requires that it be manufactured efficiently, economically and safely Translate small-scale formulation into commercial-scale manufacturing operation Role of Engineers in NPD Assist during the stages of FPD as...
