CHAPTER 7  POLITICAL ECONOMY AND DEVELOPMENT Introduction French GNP makes France the 6 th  more wealthy country in the world. in 1990 it was the 4 th  economy. Changes in 1980 happened. Before that economy was more internal, the state played a key role in shaping the  economy + inward-looking economy. After 1980 : sharp increase in the importance of global markets + ideological  shift +EU. The New French Revolution After the humiliating ending of the 3 rd  Republic, France formed its 4 th  republic. And the resistance group assumed that  economic and social modernization were essential. Studies describe the post war shift comparably to the French Revolution, because although peaceful it was a drastic  change the moral foundations and social equilibrium of France. State and economy the goal shifted from economic protection to economic expansion., the state becam the sponsor of social and  economic progress, an approach often described as dirigisme. A successful project : france was transformed into a  dynamic industrialized country. French-style economic management - Planning : After WWIIwas established an indicative planning, it was developed and implemented by democratic  procedure. And established maximum feasible rates of economic growth - Charles de Gaulle’s leadership: CDG was the most influential politician in 20 th  century French History, and a  complex, controversial and contradictory figure. He was deeply traditionalist although he believed that shock therapy  was needed to strengthen the French economy. - Dirigisme: state led industrialization, and state intervention in economy using: loans, tax write-offs, subsidies… the
