Theory and Philosophy of Communication Communicational Theory Lecture by: Dr. Natalie Nelson-Marsh Communication Theory and Scholarship Explain how communication is a different field of study from other social sciences Unlike other social sciences, communication is seen as the organizing element of human life It is interdisciplinary in origin, but has over time produced it own theories What is theory? What is “lay” theory? What is communication theory? Communication theory is either a collective wisdom found in an entire body of theories related to communication Theory – organized set of concepts, explanations, and principles of some aspect of human experience Describe the basic model of inquiry Systematic study of experience leads to understanding, knowledge, and theory Ask questions, observe, then construct answers Explain how communication theory exists as a field
