Interpersonal Communication The Basics Lecture Material by Kevin Skidmore A First Look at Interpersonal Communication Channel – the medium through which the message passes Communication – a continues transactional process involving participants who occupy different but overlapping environments and create relationships through the exchange of messages Communication competence – the ability to accomplish one’s personal goals in a manner that maintains a relationship, acceptable to both parties Computer-mediated communication (CMC) – communication between individuals that is conducted via a computer channels such as e-mail, chat, etc Content dimension – information that is being explicitly discussed Decode – making sense of the message Dyad – two people interacting Encode – putting thoughts into symbols (into words) Field of experience – caring this environment around with you also known as Frame of Reference Contexts – where does communication take place.
