Interpersonal Communication The Basics Lecture Material by Kevin Skidmore Social Exchange Theory Respiratory/reciprocal (cost/benefit) Self-disclosure – give me, I give you Onion layer – represents Rewards-Costs=Outcome Social penetration – depicts self-disclosure as a process that gradually reveals both breadth and depth of information Costs good – seek the relationship-not-don’t Seek out people who can give us rewards greater than or equal to the costs when dealing with them Seven Reasons Why People Form Relationships Appearance – pleasing personalities are seen as attractive. Physical features become less important. Like-wise attractive people Similarity – who are similar to us. Relational happiness. Like-wise levels of communication skills. Behave the same. Complementarily – “opposites attract.” Differences strengthen relationship. Complementary – when partner’s characteristics satisfy’s others needs Reciprocal attraction – to people who we believe are attracted to us
