03:21 Sexualization : Girls often begin to be more explicitly sexualized, and have to cope with this sexualization by others Even though they are pretty young, can start to realize people responding to them in different way Cognitively have not caught up to their bodies Can be treated more sexually advanced than they actually are Ex: sexual harassment – often dealt with during this age Objectified body consciousness : process whereby girls learn to think of and treat their own bodies as objects of others’ desires Disconnection – girls objectify themselves… view themselves through others eyes 3 components: Body surveillance o Frequent monitoring of one’s physical appearance o Constant surveillance to assure one’s body fits into feminine standards (can never reach this ideal) Body Shame o Internalization of cultural standards of attractiveness-believe them to be own standards o Shame about the ways one’s body doesn’t fit Control Beliefs o Believe cultural standards can be achieved if one tries hard enough
