This argument instantiates the following two forms: p ∴ q p & q ∴ p In the first argument form, ‘p’ replaces ‘Harry is tall and John is short.’ ‘q’ replaces ‘Harry is tall.’ In the second argument form, ‘p’ replaces ‘Harry is tall.’ ‘q’ replaces ‘John is short.’ I. Argument Forms Like a propositional form, an argument form represents a general pattern for an endless number of arguments. To identify an argument form, replace each of its premises and its conclusion with their propositional forms. EXAMPLE: 3/4/11 is an argument form for every argument with exactly one premise. p ∴ q 3/4/11 is an argument form for every argument with exactly one premise where: a. the premise is a conjunction; and b. the conclusion is the left conjunct of the premise. p & q ∴ p 3/4/11 Identify an argument form for each of the following 1. If the Colts win the super bowl, Ronnie will be happy. The Colts did win the super bowl. Therefore, Ronnie will be happy. 1. Either Obama won the election or McCain won the election.
