Alexander the Great Alexander the Great is also known as Alexander of Macedon was born on 22 July 356 BC ,in Pella, the capital of the Macedonia. He was the king of Macedonia between BC 336- 323 and he was one of the largest commander in history. He destroyed Persian empire, instead of he set up an empire spreading from Greek to India . Thus he was effective in expansion of the Greek civilization to the East( Yenne 244). Adolescence and education: He was the son of Philip II and Philip's fourth wife Olympias . His father was the King of Macedon . His mother is the daughter of Neoptolemus I, the king of the northern Greek state of Epirus . When he was 13-16 years old, he was educationed by Aristotle who was philosopher. Alexander was interested in medicine, philosophy, morals, religion, logic, and art. When Alexander became sixteen years old, his tutorship under Aristotle came to an end. Philip , the king, wage a war against Byzantium, and Alexander was left as regent of the kingdom. During Philip's absence he directed and beat a Thracian tribe. After . Philip II of Macedon murder (BC 336) , he was proclaimed the king ( Yenne 244) . First of all he killed the possible enemy. The inspiration of Homer’s Iliad , he visited the tomb of d Achilles and laid a wreath . At the Battle of Granikos he faced the armies of Persia for the first time( McCarty 16 ). His victory opened the doors of the Western Anatolia to him. Contrast to the policy followed in Greece, he took the initiative the establishment of democracies with Tyrants.
