Group 6: 1 Team 6 Jacqueline Warner Jeffrey Witt Billy Florio Business Policy Final Report: General Electric and Solar Power Alternative Energy As the years go by, our demand for energy is ever increasing while our energy supply is dramatically decreasing. Using up our non-renewable fuel resources has put us in a bind, and with the failure of nuclear energy, our supposed “next energy source” companies began looking into alternative energy sources to keep up with the high demand without killing our planet. A major worldwide supplier of alternate energy sources is General Electric, and even though they have developed many different types, we will be focusing on solar energy, even more specifically photovoltaic cells. Solar Energy Industry The Solar Energy Industry has become increasingly popular over the past decade, but it has been in the works since the late 1950’s. Up until recent years however, the technology to support the idea did not exist (Rose, Semiconductor Today). Once the technology was born both photovoltaic and solar power technologies began to develop. The solar industry in the U.S. marketplace is projected to grow over 100% in 2010 compared to 2009 (Kuo, VentureBeat). “Solar photovoltaic technology…converts light directly into electricity” while “solar power technology…uses mirrors and tracking systems to focus sunlight into a heat source for use in a conventional steam turbine” (Energy Business Journal, pg. 30). General Electric focuses their energy more towards the photovoltaic technology. Analysis The industry is looking to continue improvement solar-cell design and materials in order to maintain and meet the predicted demand and capacity forecasts. Even though most of the solar energy industry is based on PV technology, other technologies are widely used in conjunction with PV technology, as well as, on their own, contributing to another part of the solar energy process. Currently, three technologies make up the basis of the solar industry. The three technologies that we are referring to are silicon-wafer base photovoltaic, thin-film photovoltaic, and concentrated solar thermal power. Viewing the industry globally the United States of America is by far the least invested and is the least pursuant in the technology development as well as installation of existent resources and products. (I don’t know if you want to use any of the pictures I found or not or even how to use them if you wanted to. So this paragraph is dependent on how that goes. I can either eliminate this all together or expand on it further by using information in a picture) Federal initiatives have been put into place to help the solar energy industry prosper. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Solar America Initiative (SAI) were created in January 2006 as a part of the President’s Advanced Energy Initiative. The Solar America
