DNA-the basic instructional unit found in all living things Inheritance-acquisition of traits from parents to offspring though DNA Reproduction-mechanisms of transmitting DNA to offspring Development-transformation of an individual from one stage into another Metabolism- the series of processes by which food is converted into the energy and products needed to sustain life Response-reaction to stimuli Homeostasis-maintenance of internal conditions with tolerable limits 2) What are themes common to biology? Explain ‘Form fits function’ with an example. “Form fits function” means that an organism is designed structured or shaped in a way that will help it perform a certain function or many functions easily with this structure. For example, the fins of a fish help it to propel itself through the water. The human heart serves its function as a muscular pump to get blood circulated throughout the entire body. 3) Explain: Hierarchical organization with an example. 4) Explain: Emergent properties and Reductionism with examples. The mind could be said to be an emergent property of the brain. Holism is the approach that studies the whole of an interaction; more of a social science thing. Reductionism is the reducing of the problem to it's component parts so that the differing hierarchies of the problem are understood separately; the better to understand the whole taken together. Science uses hierarchical reductionism. 5)
