Regalado 1 Sam Regalado Ms. Rodriguez HIST 3822 22 July 2010 History in the News The article I chose is “Alderman, cultural group clash over south side mural” from the newspaper the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. This article is approximately a week old, but created a very large debate in Milwaukee. I learned about this issue because I am from Milwaukee, and I get the newspaper online. The article tells of a graffiti style mural that was temporarily displayed during a neighborhood block party last weekend. However, there were many public complaints about the mural, and the Alderman, Bob Donovan, was the central figure. A harsh debate formed between him and cultural groups supporting the mural. The mural was erected by TRUE Skool, “a group that works with at-risk youth through cultural projects.” There were many arguments about the mural, but two formed the center of the debate. The Alderman was irritated to see that public funding was “educating” children on how to create graffiti, which is illegal.
