Quainat Zaman Pass/Fail Assignment #1 Wigman and Jooss Take the Stage German Expressionism was an era in which dance evolved from classical moves to modern dance in which dancers began to perfect moves or deviate from the classical ones. Through this era, many great dancers emerged and amongst them were Mary Wigman and Kurt Jooss. Wigman believed in expressing the deepest of ones feelings by allowing the moves to produce these emotions and Joos preferred a thematic performance rather than a performance that just involved sequential moves. Their contributions and performances received standing ovations and they clearly changed the way dance was portrayed, essentially allowing German Expressionism to take a novel turn. Wigman was at first a student of Laban, however, once she left Laban’s teachings, Wigman travelled across Europe and America, allowing a versatile education of dance. She felt it was necessary to discipline the body, but at the same time express the emotions felt within. Through her performance in
