Organizational Leadership 2 Patient centered care is a critical element in today’s healthcare. Its impact on business practices, regulatory requirement and reimbursement are major considerations when implementing a change strategy. Just as important, are the tools which organizations utilize to assess performance, needs, weaknesses and strengths. An organization who continually looks to provide the very best patient experience usually ranks among the very best. Business Practices Patient-family-centered care (PFCC) is the goal of many organizations nationwide. However, many factors impact the delivery patient-family-centered care. Things like business practices, regulatory requirements and reimbursement all impact patient-family-centered care within a healthcare organization. Regulations and patient’s needs are ever changing, successful organizations learn to change with these things. Many organizations have moved to a more patient-family-centered delivery of care model. Allowing family members to stay all night with their loved ones or come and go as they please is an example of a business practice change that impacts patient-family-centered care. Regulatory requirements also impact patient-family-centered care. Standards are set forth by federal and state regulatory bodies to protect the consumers. These entities can also penalize organizations for non-compliance with these standards. Their sole mission is to make sure organizations are providing safe care and constantly looking at ways to improve care and processes. Many organizations move beyond the minimum standards of care and seek accreditation. Accreditation is paid for by the organization and has more stringent standards than guidelines set-forth by CMS. In obtaining accreditation by an agency such as The Joint Commission (TJC) or Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) organizations shows that they are practicing well above the standard. These accreditations

Organizational Leadership 3 require site visits to examine organizational practices and they substantiate that their rigorous standards are being met. Reimbursement has changed patient-family-centered care drastically. With care quality directly impacting satisfaction and outcomes, value-based care is now a primary focus. Reimbursement is directly tied to performance and outcomes. Hospitals are penalized for readmissions after discharge, hospital acquired infections and rewarded for top tier satisfaction scores. More focus is directed to quality, safety and process improvement. Patients evaluate the care they receive based on quality indicators such as safety, dignity and respect and likelihood of recommending hospital. These surveys are then scored. Results are made public as a rating for the hospital. Higher scoring hospitals receive higher reimbursement. These factors have caused
