Introduction A nation is a group of people who share common language, race, decent, or history. A state is an entity endowed with a legal “personality” The criteria for statehood under the Montevideo Convention are a permanent population, a defined territory, a government, and a capacity to enter into relations with other states. The most important requirement for achieving statehood under the constitutive theory is to be recognized by other states History The Treaty of Westphalia called on governments to not to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries, causing the treaty to be seen as the beginning of the modern system of states. Mercantilism is the use of military power to enrich imperial governments. Sovereignty is the expectation that states have legal and political supremacy – or ultimate authority- within their territorial boundaries. Pax Britannica means “British Peace.” It was a one hundred year period from 1815-1914 where Britain’s economic and diplomatic influence contributed to economic openness and relative peace. The Cold War was from 1945-1990. The principle antagonists were the United States and the Soviet Union. Two Principle Cold War alliances were NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and the Warsaw Pact . Interests, Interactions, Institutions A dominant strategy in game theory is when an actor makes the same choice regardless of what the opponent does. The dominant strategy in the “Prisoner’s Dilemma” is defecting to the police regardless of his partner’s actions. Cooperation
