Chemistry 103 Spring 2010 2 Review A redox reaction involves the transfer of electrons (e - ) and changes in oxidation number of substances. reduction : the half-reaction in which electrons are gained and oxidation number decreases. oxidation : the half-reaction in which electrons are lost and oxidation number increases. Both half-reactions must occur for the net redox reaction to occur. One substance gains electrons from a different substance that loses electrons.
