Terminal bud of branch Terminal and Axillary Buds The terminal bud of the main stem produces the tissue of the stem and all its leaves and axillary buds The axillary buds of the main stem produce the branches of the main stem The terminal bud of a branch (grown from an axillary bud) produces the tissue, leaves, and buds of the branch The axillary buds of the branch produce branches of the branch The structure of buds (terminal or axillary) is identical and mirrors the structure of the stem ; buds contain an apical meristem, developing leaves (leaf primordia), developing buds (bud primordia), nodes, and internodes.
