Client and Counselor Dialogue (6:50 – 17:07)Skill Used (Verbal and Nonverbal) CommentsCounselor: So I noticed on your intake that you recently graduated college.Client: I did. This spring, actually.Counselor: Oh, alright. Congratulations.Client: Or, last spring. It always feels a lot closer.Counselor: Right. What did you get your degree in?Client: Environmental studies.Counselor: Okay, well that makes sense then why you connect with nature so well.Client: I want to get into conservation. Wildlife conservation. Maybe more in the political sphere.Counselor: Okay. So how’s that transition been for you coming out of college?Client: It’s been hard finding a job in my area. There’s not a lot of parks nearby. There’s not a lot of wilderness that needs taken care of in that sort of way, so I don’t have much use for the degree in my area. And I didn’t want to move out until I had paid off my loans.Counselor: Okay, so a bit of aDoor openerpraiseClosed questionSmilesOpen-ended questionNon-verbal skills Tone expresses curiosityNodding, listening attentively

financial barrier there, too.Client. I guess I could move out any time. There are lots ofpeople to make it work living on their own with student loans, but I don’t know. It feels like a big risk.Counselor. Right. If you’re more comfortable waiting, that’s alright. So you live with your parents then, still?Client: I do. Which is a little bit of the struggle.Counselor: Okay. Are they able to provide any support for you?Client: Financially and housing wise, yeah. And they do try to provide emotional support, it just doesn’t alwayscome across as it was intended.Counselor: Gotcha. So tell me about your relationships with your parents.Client: Ever since quarantine they’ve gotten a little more tense. Things that were never a problem before are suddenly problems and everybody seems to be a littleon edge even when nothing’s wrong.Counselor: Right. There seems to be a looming agitation or irritability going on.Client: That’s the real disease Minimal encouragerMinimal encourager/ ValidationClosed questionMinimal encourager/Closed questionMinimal encourager/ Open-ended questionMinimal encourager/ParaphrasingCould have been more open-ended here. “Tell me more about that”This was a self-correction from my previous question.
