The passage from Jeremiah is about the lord asking why people turn away from God and instead go after sins and bad, undesirable things. It is saying that people chase after things which they really shouldnt/dont want or want to be. The significance to temporary society is that people should be stepping back and reevaluating their lives. We should be asking ourselves if we are headed towards the right thing or if we are seeking something that we really want. Its similar to when people buy lots of expensive things. We need to step back and ask ourselves, do we really want that? Or do we really want people to see us that way? The passage about the racing is about facing harder tasks.
