Unformatted text preview: SEQUENCE STRATIGRAPHY SUBDIVIDING THE STRATIGRAPHIC RECORD INTO GENETICALLY RELATED UNITS BOUNDED BY UNCONFORMITIES (EROSIONAL OR NON- DEPOSITIONAL SURFACE BOUNDARIES FOR SEQUENCES AND STRATAL GEOMETRIES AND STACKING PRODUCT OF BASE LEVEL CHANGE FROM EUSTACY, SUBSIDENCE OR SEDIMENT INFLUX Depositional Sequences • Conformable succession of genetically-related strata, bounded at the top and base by : – Unconformities (surfaces of erosion or non-deposition) or their – Correlative conformities • That branch of stratigraphy which subdivides the rock record using a succession of depositional sequences composed of genetically- related strata as regional and interregional correlative units Sequence Stratigraphy • Sequence Boundaries – Basinward shift in depositional facies – Surfaces of erosion and/or non-deposition – May show significant biostratigraphic break I n c i s e d V a l l e y F i l l H i g h s t a n d S.B. Depositional Systems (Fisher & McGowen, 1967) 3-D assemblage of genetically related depositional facies Genetic Stratigraphy (Galloway, 1989) Subdivides stratigraphic succession at condensed section (CS) or maximum flooding surfaces (MFS). Sequence Stratigraphy (Van Wagoner et al., 1990) Subdivides stratigraphic succession at unconformity surfaces and their correlative conformities. Sequence Stratigraphy: (Embry, 1993) Uses subaerial erosional unconformity and maximum regressive surface .
