Cory Baker Perm #: 3851763 Section 448 11-03-09 Anthropology 005 Introduction to Physical Anthropology Problem Set # 4: Speciation, classification and the comparative method 1. There are millions of reproductively isolated species now in existence yet we believe all organisms are related. A. What does it mean to say that all organisms are related? When we say that all organisms are related, it means that they share a common ancestor. B. What is the best evidence that they are related? The best evidence that they are related is through primitive traits. C. The allopatric model suggests how new species might evolve.  In general, what two circumstances are thought  to be essential to the division of one interbreeding population into two reproductively isolated ones? In general, the two circumstances that are thought to be essential to the division of one interbreeding population  into two reproductively isolated ones are character displacement and reinforcement.  Character displacement is the  result of competition between two species that causes the members of different species to become morphologically  or behaviorally more different from each other.  Reinforcement is the process in which selection acts against the  likelihood of hybrids occurring between members of two phenotypically distinctive populations, leading to the  evolution of mechanisms that prevent interbreeding. 2. Classification is important in biology for several reasons.
