Cory Baker 10/06/10 Tues. @ 10AM Kant, "What is Enlightenment?" (reader #2) Voltaire, "Candide" (entire) Assignment Description: Please type your responses (4-5 sentences per question) to the following questions using twelve-point Times New Roman font, and bring a printed copy with your name on it to section: 1) Who was your favorite character in Voltaire's "Candide" and why? How does this character reflect Voltaire's viewpoints regarding the society he lived in? My favorite character in Voltaire’s “Candide” is Pangloss. He is my favorite character because he sets the main theme of the novel. His philosophy of “finding the best of all possible worlds” is a great theme set to this novel. I feel that Pangloss is a very appropriate character in this Enlightenment based novel because he is like many of the great Philosophes of this time. Although his philosophy can be contradicted by his own personal problems, he stays optimistic. 2) What is the significance of Eldorado and why does Candide leave it?
