The essential answer for each question is contained in a box and the rest involves explanations. Question 1. (3 points total) a.) (2.5 points, 0.5 points each diagram) A particular animal species has four chromosomes (2n = 4). Each diagram below depicts a cell in either M phase (mitosis) or meiosis. For each diagram, indicate (i) whether it depicts meiosis or mitosis, (ii) the particular stage, and (iii) the substage if it is in meiosis. (0.5 points) A sunflower has a diploid chromosome number of 2N = 34. How many chromatids are present in one of this sunflower’s cells at prophase II of meiosis? Meiosis II follows the reduction division of meiosis I, so in Meiosis II there should be 17 centromeres in each of the 2 cells. In prophase II there are still 2 chromatids per centromere so: 2 x 17 = 34 chromatids Question 2 (4 points total). An amateur maize breeder studying ethanol production isolates two true breeding strains, one for high ethanol and one for low ethanol, and crosses them together to produce an F1. The F1 is used to make an F2. When 2,000 of the F2 plants are evaluated for ethanol production, 536 are high-ethanol and 1464 are low-ethanol. a.) (1 point) Propose a simple genetic hypothesis to explain these data. Since the ratio of low-ethanol to high-ethanol in the F2 generation is close to 3:1, the genetic hypothesis would be complete dominance where the high-ethanol trait is recessive to the low- ethanol trait.
