AE311 Fall 2008 Problem Set 2 Due: 26 Sept 2008 1. (20 points) Your excellent performance in AE 311 has landed you a cushy job with Boeing. They have put you in charge of the preliminary design of a subsonic wind tunnel. It is closed circuit with a test section diameter of 8 feet. Wind Tunnel Schematic (Ignore dimensions in figure) Douglas DC-3 Testing at GALCIT Air is flowing through the nozzle with the following properties: Ratio of specific heats, γ = 1.4 Specific gas constant, R = 287 J/kgK Static pressure, P = 1 atm = 101.3 kPa Static temperature T = 295 K Flow velocity in test section, V ts = 25 m/s Diameter at Test Section, D ts = 8 ft Diameter at Station 2, D 2 = 20 ft Further, consider that the converging section of the tunnel (starting at Station 2 and ending at the test section), has a length of 9 feet and that the radius at any location, x, inside the converging section is defined as r(x) = 10 - 2 (x), as shown in the attached Appendix. Neglect body (including gravitational) and viscous forces. a)
