11/02/09 Psych 100B – Lecture 5 Self report: most subject to demand characteristics and most likely to be social desirability. People tend to say that they would do what is deemed most socially acceptable when they might not really do it in real life. Are people actually able to tell you how they would really respond in a situation? o Experiment: Two randomly assigned groups. One group: asked that they were being interviewed for a job at a university and two of the questions were very off-base. (Would you ever come to work without wearing a bra?) They were asked “What would you do if you were asked these questions?” Everyone said they would be outraged and say they would not answer that question and walk out of the interview. Second group: actually given the interview. Set up as a real job, real interview. They were asked the two same off-base questions. None of the single people in the actual interview reacted in the same way as the first group. None of them even talked about feeling outraged or offended
