19 th October 2010 SEAS 1 – Lecture 8 Folk Religions in Southeast Asia What is Religion? Organised spirituality. Having to do with either a deity or multiple deities. Involves rituals. Requires faith, belief. There are many different dimensions of religion and different manifestations of all these aspects. Overview of religion in Southeast Asian life Religion is an extremely important element of life in Southeast Asia. Has always been, even before the Indians and Chinese came. Inexplicably intertwined with aspects of Southeast Asian daily life. Before 19 th century, there was no real word for “religion,” people just accepted manifestations of religious beliefs as parts of their daily lives. Folk Religions in Southeast Asia Folk Religions vs. “World Religions” : Indigenous religions that existed prior to the arrival of “World Religions.” They developed on their own and elaborated over time. Folk religious practices and practitioners are less likely to separate out religion from their everyday lives because it is so intertwined it cannot be separated out in any useful fashion. World Religions such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism are characterised by the fact that they are practiced throughout the world (traveled beyond the point at which they started), these are religions that believe that anyone can belong to the religion. They have central texts which transmit both the ideas and genealogy of those who started the religion. They are a point of reference so you can go back to the text to seek clarity on points of religion. The point of origin for all these religions is a single historical figure. They have a historical moment of origin from a particular individual. They all have a traceable history. They are all transcendental, they have a separation from the living world and of the afterlife. They are two discrete realms. Major Elements of Folk Religions
