Lamichell Phang English 101/Heilien T Letter to editor 1 February 2011 “Hey Lam! It’s 5 p.m already, go home now!” my mom said to me on the phone. I’m an only one child, that’s why my parents are always scared that something might happen to me. Even though I’m 17 years old now, my parents still don’t trust me. They always protect me like I’m still a little naughty girl. When I was still in elementary school, they always took care of me. However, when I started Senior High School, my mom still worried about me like I couldn’t protect my own world or do things on my own. But now, I’m declaring my self independent from my parents. I won’t rely on my parents anymore and will establish my self as an independent person. Now I’m going to college in United States, which is really far from my hometown Jakarta. Everything has changed, I’m forcing my self to do everything that I usually don’t have to do on my own. I’m also facing culture shock, becoming stronger, and seeing the world through my own eyes.
