Laboratory #4: Instrument Characteristics September 27, 2010 Ben Rainey Objectives: Measuring a system changes the system’s behavior. The overall goal for this lab was to develop an understanding of introducing a measuring device into a circuit, and to develop an understanding of how the instrument affects the measurement. There were four main objectives used to accomplish this goal. Two of these objectives involve use of an ammeter and two of these objectives employ a voltmeter. The first objective for the lab was to determine the internal resistance of the digital ammeter. Once this resistance value was known, objective two could be completed. Objective two was to determine the effect of the ammeter’s internal resistance on the measurement of current. Having completed lab work with ammeter, the voltmeter was now employed. Objective three was to determine the internal resistance of the digital voltmeter. Successful completion of objective three allowed for completion of the final objective. Objective four was to determine the effect of the voltmeter’s internal resistance on the measurement of voltages. Equipment: 1. DC Power Supply, TENMA, 72-7245 2. Digital multimeter, Meterman, BDM40 3. Resistance decade boxes (2), High Power, Clarostat, 240C Procedure: To determine the internal resistance of the ammeter, the circuit in Figure 1 was constructed. The range of the ammeter was set to the 2mA scale. For safety reasons, this scale
