Garland Jones Community Service Paper I volunteered at the Daytona Beach YMCA where Mrs. Laurice Bartley was my supervisor. My job during this period of service was a combination of counselor, tutor, and sectary. I learned how to manage and conduct certain sessions with staff members and children. I helped maintain order within study groups and in physical recreation. I had the pleasure of tutoring and preparing many of the children who participate in the after school program for the FCAT and many other test. The tutoring sessions where conducted as soon as the children came to the facility. The sessions lasted for 2 to 3 hours, and the session where conducted in groups or on an individual basis. Some of the children would come to the volunteers and express problems with school, family, or on a more personal level. The volunteers along with myself would listen and help

Sectary work consisted of folding, stamping, and mailing numerous documents. Also, many days where spent typing, pre-written proposals, newsletters, and other types of documentation. The days of community service and the jobs that where required where divided between the other volunteers and myself. I learned during my experience at the YMCA that it requires much work and dedication to the recreation center and the children. I learned that it’s more to a recreation center than a gym, pool, and playground. I experienced the hard work that goes into maintaining a successful organization such as the Daytona Beach YMCA....
