Lab 1 Presentation Spring 2011 2 Bilateral symmetry = Credit: © Lauren Harper (dog); © Gail Johnson (owl); © Valerie Abbott (frog) 4 Asexual reproduction: Sexual reproduction: 5 Sexual reproduction Costs Recombination breaks up favorable genotypes Meiosis requires more than twice as long as mitosis Increased time mate searching, Asexual reproduction Benefits Favorable genotypes are preserved Mitosis rapid No mate searching, reduced Genome dilution: Offspring carry only ½ of each parent’s genes Sexual selection can reduce fitness Benefits Increased genetic diversity exposure to predation & disease Offspring clones of parents No sexual selection to reduce fitness Costs Little genetic diversity 6

Lab 1 Presentation Spring 2011 3 Why is genetic diversity important? • Genetically diverse offspring can take advantage of spatially heterogeneous environments in which genetically identical offspring would compete compete. • Recombination produces new genotypes to which predators and parasites are not yet adapted, and reciprocally allows predators and parasites to co-adapt more effectively. 7
