Lab 6 – Histology – Student Slides Spring 2011 1 Histology General Biology 102 Lab 6 The study of tissues is called histology (from the Greek: "histos," tissue, and "logia," knowledge) 4 Tissue Types : Epithelial – continuous sheets of cells lining all the external surfaces and internal cavities of an animal's body Connective – perform connective and supportive functions: giving form to and anchoring the organs of the body; consist of one or more cell types embedded in a matrix Muscle – Elongate fibers specialized for contraction; all movement in higher animals is dependent upon the contractile capabilities of muscle. Nervous – receive and transmit internal as well as external stimuli Epithelial tissues - perform 4 functions (1) Protection (2) Absorption (3) Secretion (4) Sensory reception Epithelial tissue is characterized by having one surface of the tissue Epithelial tissue is characterized by having one surface of the tissue attached to a basement membrane. Different types of epithelium may be distinguished by their morphological appearance, which in turn is dependent on the location of the tissue and the particular tasks it must accomplish. Simple epithelium Stratified epithelium

Lab 6 – Histology – Student Slides Spring 2011 2 Simple squamous epithelium - lining of blood vessel • Found in areas of low abrasion, such as the lining of the coelom and blood the lining of the coelom and blood vessels. • Involved in passage of materials where little or no protection is needed. © Carolina Biological/Visuals Unlimited Simple cuboidal epithelium - kidney tubule • Function in both secretion and absorption (or diffusion and absorption (or diffusion in the kidney). • This tissue type is also commonly found in glands. Human kidney tubule © Carolina Biological/Visuals Unlimited Thyroid follicles • The thyroid is made up of follicles, spherical layers of simple cuboidal epithelium.
