Unformatted text preview: 1 Meeting 4 Molecules & Molecular Compounds Substance: Matter of definite composition and properties. Substances cannot be separated by physical means. Compound: a substance composed of two or more elements . All samples of a given compound contain the same ratio of elements. Compounds can be subdivided in several ways: Organic vs. inorganic (all organic compounds contain C) Molecular vs. ionic 2 Ions vs. molecules Molecules : electrically neutral groups of atoms held together by chemical bonds. Molecules : exist as discrete entities. It makes sense to discuss a molecule of water or propane. Ion : an atom, or group of atoms that has gained or lost electrons. All ions are electrically charged. Ionic compound : a group of positive and negative ions held together by electrostatic interaction. Only the ratio of ions is the same from sample to sample. Some examples follow 3 Molecular Compounds Acetic acid below Green = Cl; Yellow = S; Red = O; Gray = H 4 Ball & stick and space- filling models dont identify the atoms using chemical symbols....
