Deep to the pericardium is the serous pericardium. The parietal pericardium lines the inside of the pericardium. The visceral pericardium, or epicardium, covers the surface of the heart. 1. Describe the structure and function of each of the three layers of the heart wall. The heart wall contains three layers: the epicardium (the visceral pericardium), myocardium (the muscular wall of the heart), and the endocardium (the epithelium covering the inner surfaces of the heart). 2. Describe the structure and functions of the four heart chambers. Name each chamber and provide the name and general route of its associated great vessel(s). The right and left atria are the receiving chambers of the heart. The right ventricle pumps blood into the pulmonary trunk; the left ventricle pumps blood into the aorta. 3.
