Productivity of Union Workers 2 Abstract The debate between whether unions are beneficial to firms or just to themselves is as old as the concept of unionization. Union members enjoy higher wages, greater benefits, and the ability to collectively bargain with firms to gain the best of working conditions. We know that union members are generally more skilled and have less turnover than their nonunion counterparts. We know that union members enjoy safer and healthier work environments. But do these perks come at the expense of productivity or do happier workers work harder? These are the questions that will be explored.

Productivity of Union Workers 3 The Effects of Unionization on the Productivity of Workers Unionization in the U.S. has declined since the late 1970s when 27% of U.S. workers were covered by union contracts. These days, only about 12% are covered. This decrease in unionization has had negative effects on equality, wages, and other benefits. On the other hand, European countries have strong union ties.
