Modes of Conduct Instrumental values  – those that help in attaining a certain goal Terminal values  – those ends or goals Personal or Social Preferences provide a basis for personal actions, provide guides for reaching  decisions, resolving conflict, and justifying behavior Serve as a basis for which others’ actions are judged Common values can draw a group together and help to establish  boundaries within the group
