Shashi Patel Eng 102 Section 009 04/26/2007 Email: [email protected] Light and Darkness in Robin’s life Light plays a major role in romanticism. In different stories the authors use light to explain the main part of the story. The author of the short story has used symbolic images of light and darkness to illuminate the theme. Romanticism is an artistic and intellectual movement that originated in late 18 th century, gave birth to many great authors such as Edger Elen Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Coleridge and etc. Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story "My Kinsman, Major Molineux" is about young man named Robin, who is looking for his family relative Major Molineux. That particular short story of Robin’s adventures is so important as far as Romanticism is concerned because it characterizes its unusual and exotic style. Romanticism stresses strong emotion, imagination, freedom from classical correctness in art forms, and rebellion against social conventions. Nathaniel Hawthorne, in his story also shows relationship between order and disorder in terms of Robin expectations from people he meets on his way. First of all, the important question for the readers of “My Kinsman, Major Molineux” is whether or not Robin actually learns anything from his experience in town. The images of light and darkness in the story have significant meaning because darkness symbolizes a dark innocence of Robin’s mistakes, and on the other hand light symbolizes 1

explored and painful knowledge. Especially, in Romanticism, the artists used light and darkness as in their paintings to explore or concentrate on particular object in the painting. For example, slides of Romantic Paintings shown in the classroom illustrate that concentration of the light toward particular object; however, the background seems to be blurred. (Goya, The 3rd of May). Every romantic author or poet choose their setting in night or darkness, so the reader can go into the world of imagination which means in a dream world. As you can anticipate that as soon as ferryman lifted a lantern, the imagination ends and the story come to an absolute world. Romanticism can be seen as a rejection of the precepts of order, calm, harmony, balance, idealization, and rationality that typified Classicism in general and late 18th- century neoclassicism in particular (“Romanticism”). Romanticism was also characterized as the movement against any physical materialism in general. It was following: a deepened appreciation of the beauties of nature that for example Robin was into when he arrived at the new place. Everything was different in the new City then it was in his little Village. He started to appreciate simplicity of his home town.
