Patel 1 Jaymin Patel Seema Kurup Eng 101 November 21, 2007 Nursing Home Abuse Wouldn't we like to live in our own house? How would we feel when our own children give us a nursing home admission form? At that moment, some parents fill out the form just for their children's sake. Some may argue; however, they end up in nursing homes because parents are used to fulfulling their children's wishes. Now-a-days, there are nursing homes that are full of elderly people. It is in our hands whether to offer the form to our parents or not. With over 1.5 million elderly and dependent parents now living in nursing homes throughout the country, abuse and neglect has become a widespread problem. Elderly parents should not be put into nursing homes. Nursing homes are a bad place to live for elderly parents because it is expensive, the level of care is often sub-standard for the patient and it is not emotionally beneficial for elderly parents. To begin with, nursing homes are a bad place to live for elderly parents because it is expensive. When planning for nursing home costs, it helps to know what they charge! Although many people are using $60,000 a year as an estimate of current charges. Recent data suggests, the average may now be nearly 80,000 a year. The cost of medication and physician visits are not included in the basic charge. There are also additional chrages for drugs, laundry, haircuts, and extra services. According to

www.usatoday.com on Novemeber 13, 2007 stated that, "Fewer Seniors live in Patel 2 nursing homes. The percentage of the oldest age group of seniors living in nursing homes has been dropping." Before doing research on this topic, I would have said that the United States treats the elderly people with passion and love, but I know that I was wrong. The elderly people have been treated just as badly, if not worse then, in India. How could this be? The elderly parents are so innocent, loving and have nothing but care for most people.
