Hiral Gandhi Hum 105: Great Ideas of the World Writing Assignment: Postmodernism 03/10/09 Postmodernism in Education/ school Postmodernism defines itself, the one that’s after modernism. It is a particular way of seeing life, which literally means “after what is now”. Postmodernism refers to the philosophical and cultural movement, whose central premise is to reject all the “metanarratives”. It is the reaction to the certainty of scientific or objective efforts to explain reality. Postmodernism denies the existence of any ultimate principles, it rejects the authority and it also supports reliance upon reason. It gives eight terms new meanings: Knowledge, truth, logic, authority, values, ethics, words and feelings. In the postmodern model we don’t really “know” anything but we just “interpret”. According to a modernist the truth was largely relative, but the possibility of universal in knowledge remains conceivable. There is a lot of influence of postmodernism on school and education. Postmodernist says “pick a worldview” as if it is only an issue of choice of food “and create your interpretation accordingly”. There are lots of schools/colleges where appropriate language in classroom is forced to practiced, but even instructors/teachers do not follow these rules. According to one of my instructors “the best thing about Harper College (Community College in general) is that you can use any kind of language (appropriate/inappropriate) you want and nobody is going to tell you anything about it”. the other hand when the semester starts we are told ahead of time that inappropriate language will not be tolerated in the class. This kind of academic dishonesty has downgraded the level of education in the school and students tend to speak the same kind of stuff in other classes and even in the higher authority of education like universities. Due to this the students suffer when they are punished due to this behavior which is not even their fault. Students are taught to break rules at the place where students come to learn something.
