BIS2C Lecture 21 Feb 12, 2011. 1. Fruit development: a. What is fruit? A matured ovary + seed b. After fertilization i. Ovule –> seed (just like you have seen before) ii. Ovary walls -> enlarge into fruit iii. Simple example: a peach 2. Variation in floral form a. general i. complete: all whorls present ii. incomplete: some whorls missing iii. perfect: stamens and carpels in the same flower iv. imperfect: a unisexual flower v. symmetry: radial or bilateral b. pollination syndromes i. Already seen in lab ii. As a reminder, some of the variation in floral forms correlates with the animals that pollinate the flower. 1. For example, bee-pollinated flowers often have a place for the bee to land, have UV-visible nectar guides, bright showy, blue or yellow flowers, sweet odor. 2. In contrast, bird pollinated flowers are often red (bees cannot see red), thing narrow tubes, abundant nectar. Little or no odor. iii. I want to discuss two questions about these pollination syndromes: 1. Have they arisen multiple times? a. Yes! Thought to have arisen independently at least 65 times! 2. Also, although more of a 2B type of question I want to discuss how scientists are investigating the importance of these floral traits. There are two sister-species of mimulus (Monkey flower) which grow near each other in the Sierra. One is hummingbird pollinated and shows the traits that normally go along with that. The other is bee pollinated and shows traits consistent with that. But which of these features are truly important to the birds and the bees? a. The experiment was to cross the two species together. In the second generation they obtained a wide-range of floral morphologies between the two.
