“The Merchants of Cool,” a PBS Frontline special, shows the relationship between the media and today’s teens. They are the creators and sellers of popular culture and their target is us, the teenagers. Teens are the number one consumers in today’s society and that is why most companies spend their money directing their advertisements toward teens. I think this film definitely very effective in what it was trying to say. It made teens think about advertisements in another light. We, as teens, are exposed to 3,000 ads a day. I think hearing the statistics and facts about teens and the media it really opened our eyes to the reality of our society.

This is evident in the way big business focuses on the weakest link in society, the youth. They know that this will make them money. Many schools have begun to set aside classes about teaching media literacy. I think this is important in this day and age. It teaches them to look at ads and evaluate the motives and point of the ad. Do I really need this? Most of the time the answer is no. Teens today need to be smarter with their money. College is ahead and is getting more expensive every year. That is what teens should be using their money for....
