Melody Samuel-Boutros PHS 2101- 8:00-10:50 AM Title : Agarose Gel Electrophoresis of DNA Objective : To understand the concept and uses of electrophoresis and to visualize the difference between the way the plasmid and the cut plasmid will travel on an electrophoresis gel. Method : Refer to page 25-26 Results : Discussion and Reference : Electrophoresis is based on the fact that DNA, RNA, and proteins all have a net negative charge. They migrate when they are placed in an electric field. Any positively charged particle (cation) will migrate toward the cathode and negatively charged particle will migrate toward the anode. The purpose of this lab was to visualize the difference between the way the plasmid and the cut plasmid will travel on an electrophoresis gel. In our experiment, our gel reading was good (+), the plasmid appeared and there were bands that were shown. To visualize DNA, or RNA the gel must be placed on an ultraviolet transluminator.
