The assignment below asks you to observe the way that the quotes at the beginning of each chapter of the book correlate with the context of the chapter . Consider Kidd’s idea for having quotes that relate to bees’ life cycles or honey production for each chapter and how they connect to the novel. You will evaluate each quote’s significance and determine a chapter title for at least four of the fourteen chapters. Explain the significance of each chapter’s opening quote: Sue Monk Kidd wrote her first novel, The Secret Life of Bees in the year 1997, but the setting of her work dates to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. The 60s was an era of protesting war (Vietnam War), a race to space, and racial tension. In the novel Kidd takes readers on a journey of the American South through the eyes of a 14-year old girl in search of the truth.
