Questions The village is the fundamental unit of rural society in China. The Chinese village was swept by two dramatic revolutions during the 2 nd half of the 20 th century. The first was the collectivization of agriculture in the 1950s. People’s communes made China a socialist countryside. The second revolution was the dissolution of People’s communes. This turned the Chinese countryside into a modernizing and marketizing economy since 1979. Describe the dramatic changes in rural organization that have helped make the Chinese countryside what it is today. What were the adverse effects of decollectivization of agriculture in China?
